    What Is a Breast Lump?

A breast lump is a swelling, bump or thickened area in the breast or its surrounding tissue that may occur in one or both breasts. Breast lumps can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). While many breast lumps are not cancerous, it is important to have any new or unusual lump evaluated by a healthcare professional without delay.
At MIRA Health Care, our experienced breast specialists provide comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis of breast lumps using advanced clinical examinations, imaging techniques and, when necessary, a biopsy. Early diagnosis is essential to determine whether a lump is benign or malignant and to ensure timely, appropriate treatment for the best possible outcome.

    Infection

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that commonly occurs in breastfeeding (lactating) women. During breastfeeding, the skin around the nipple may crack or become damaged, allowing bacteria to enter the breast tissue and cause an infection. The infection may result in the formation of a breast abscess (a collection of pus) or spread through the surrounding tissue, causing cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection characterised by redness, swelling and pain.

    Injuries

An injury to the breast can cause blood vessels to rupture, leading to localised swelling and bruising. This may result in the death of fat cells, a condition known as fat necrosis. Fat necrosis can also occur following a breast biopsy or breast surgery. In some cases, it may be associated with nipple discharge or dimpling of the skin over the affected area, which should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

    Breast Cyst

Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that feel smooth, soft or rubbery beneath the skin. They are benign (non-cancerous) and may be painless or cause discomfort, depending on their size and location. Breast cysts can range from a few millimetres to several centimetres in diameter and may cause discomfort by pressing against the surrounding breast tissue. Sebaceous cysts may also develop when the ducts of the oil glands in the breast become blocked.

    Adenoma

Any abnormal growth in the glandular tissue in the breast is an adenoma. Generally fibroadenoma develop in women below 30 years of age. These are round and form with smooth borders and are non-cancerous in nature.

    Intraductal Papillomas

Intraductal papillomas are small, wart-like, benign growths that develop within the milk ducts of the breast. They are most commonly found beneath or near the nipple and may cause nipple discharge, which can occasionally be blood-stained. Younger women, particularly those of reproductive age, may develop multiple intraductal papillomas, whereas women approaching menopause are more likely to have a single growth.

    Lipoma

A lipoma is a soft, painless and movable lump made up of fatty tissue. It is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour that develops beneath the skin and may occur in the breast. Lipomas are usually harmless, grow slowly and generally do not require treatment unless they become painful, increase in size or cause cosmetic concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Breast Lumps Treatment

A breast specialist will perform a physical examination and may recommend diagnostic tests such as a breast ultrasound, mammogram or biopsy to identify the nature of the lump.

No. Most breast lumps are not cancerous. They may be caused by conditions such as cysts, fibroadenomas, hormonal changes or infections. However, it is important to have any new or unusual lump evaluated by a doctor.

You should seek medical advice if you notice a new breast lump, changes in an existing lump, persistent breast pain, nipple discharge, skin changes or any unusual changes in your breasts. Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.

Some breast lumps, particularly those related to hormonal changes or simple cysts, may reduce in size or disappear over time. However, any persistent or recurring lump should be assessed by a breast specialist.

At MIRA Health Care, our experienced breast specialists provide comprehensive breast examinations, advanced diagnostic imaging and personalised treatment for both benign and malignant breast conditions.
